Montenegro Urged to Punish Border Policeman’s Killers

The assistant director of the Montenegrin Police Directorate, Nikola Janjusevic, said after the killing of the police officer on Sunday that the attackers must face justice.

Montenegro border police officer Milutin Lekovic was shot in the head in the resort town of Igalo, not far from Croatia, during the arrest of three foreign nationals who did not have any documents.

Janjusevic said the Police Directorate will do all it can to protect serving officers.

"They are not clay pigeons," Janjusevic told public broadcaster RTCG.

Two men and a woman were later caught after being chased by police near the border with Croatia when the suspect in the killing of a police officer pulled his gun again.

The police announced on Monday that the alleged assailants are Albanian citizens and that the suspected shooter has been wanted since 2018 by Albanian police for homicide, attempted conspiracy and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The president of the council for police control, Aleksandar Zekovic, called for legal changes so that in future, life sentences can be handed down for the murder of police officers.

"The killing of a police officer on duty confirms how police work is full of various potential dangers. The police profession deserves the highest social respect and support," Zekovic told daily newspaper Vijesti.

Janjusevic said he would support this initiative and recalled that the Police Directorate has long warned of an increasing number of attacks on police officers.Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic and Prime Minister Dusko Markovic said that the state would take care of the family of the deceased police officer.
