Montenegrins Return to Streets as Coronavirus Restrictions Eased

The streets of Podgorica have been crowded with people again after the easing on Monday of government-imposed measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Barbers, beauty salons, shops, fitness centres taxis and dentists began opening their doors as part of the first phase of lifting restrictions, although many measures remain in force and a curfew is still in place from 11pm to 5am.

"It's great that we can work again. Life is coming back to normal after almost two months," said Davor Pejovic, a barber in Podgorica.

"We're still getting used to working with medical masks and social distancing, but we are at work - and that's more important," he added.

By order of the National Coordination Body for Infectious Diseases, everyone must maintain social distancing rules and wear a protective mask in enclosed spaces.

Only two people can ride in a taxi at the same time and only in the back seat, while all locks must be disinfected after each ride. In fitness centres and dentists' clinics, all equipment must be disinfected.

On Tuesday, the National Coordination Body announced that companies that don't provide masks for their employees or protection for their customers could be fined between 100 and 20,000 euros.

The next phase in the lifting of restrictions is set for May 18, when cafes, restaurants, bars and malls can reopen.

The National Coordination Body announced that sporting events in the country can start from June 1, but without spectators. From June 1, inter-city traffic will be allowed.

Since the beginning of the epidemic there have been 324 cases of COVID-19 in Montenegro, but 249 have recovered so far. Eight people have died.
