President Iohannis says Romania supports Western Balkan countries to access the EU

President Klaus Iohannis underscored on Wednesday the importance of enhancing the relation with the Western Balkans, showing that Romania supports the accession of these countries to the European Union. "For me and for Romania, it is extremely important to enhance the connection with the Western Balkans and to encourage the countries to accede to the status of members of the European Union in due time, of course, and I admit that I am very glad that we made some substantial steps in the right direction. So, from Romania, from me, full support for the countries in their procedures. I want the Western Balkans with us, near us, but I expect them also to say: 'Yes, you, the European Union, are our partners!.' I would love to hear that very clear from all our friends from the Western Balkans. And sometimes, of course, help from the European Union does not come in two seconds, but every time it comes, it is substantial and it is important. So, let me just finalise, I think that we are on the good road, but the good road has to work on both sides," President Iohannis said within his intervention at the EPP Summit, which was held in a videoconference system. The head of state will participate on Wednesday, also through a videoconference system, in the EU - Western Balkans Zagreb Summit.
