Gorenje expanding workforce

Velenje – Gorenje, the Chinese-owned household appliances maker, has hired around 800 extra staff since mid-August to meet an increase in orders, and is planning to open 300 more jobs by the end of the year.

The company said part of the expansion in staff was to replace existing staff who are being moved to a facility manufacturing TV sets, to be launched in January.

The company said the newly employed are not agency workers.

Its data show that Hisense Europe companies in Slovenia currently employ a total of just over 5,800 workers.

The company has been seeing growing orders for several months now. In January it plans to start production of TV sets for the European market under new company called Hisense Europe Electronic.

The company recently announced it would initially employ 330 production workers in the plant. Together with high-skilled staff, about 400 jobs are to be opened at the plant by January.

Gorenje said part of the new hirings was to make up for absences due to coronavirus quarantines.

The company said due to the many precautionary measures taken infections were not spreading in the company, but employees were getting infected outside the work setting, as a result of which their close fellow workers are ordered to self-isolate as well.

While estimates or data on this year’s results are not available yet, Gorenje reported a group net loss of EUR 55.2 million for last year on EUR 1.23 billion in revenue.
