Ministry to take into account energy poverty report

Ljubljana – The Ministry of Infrastructure will try to take into account the recommendations and proposals from a recent EU-wide report about energy poverty in Slovenia. The report says that despite EU requirements, Slovenia has failed to adequately address energy poverty in its national energy and climate plan.

The country’s plan lacks a clear definition of energy poverty as well as indicators and goals in terms of quantity, so efficiency of measures could not be monitored, the environmental Focus NGO said last week as it presented the report.

The ministry said today that given the complexity of the area it covers, the comprehensive national plan could not set out all the solutions yet.

However, it clearly sets out activities and a timeline to define energy poverty and the manner in which it is measured and to draw up an action plan to contain it, the ministry told the STA.

The target date to come up with the definition, indicators and goals is the start of 2021.

The ministry listed the measures Eco Fund, the country’s public environmental fund, offers to the socially deprived to fight energy poverty.

It fully covers their investments to improve or eliminate energy poverty, so the beneficiaries do not need any own funds.

Eligible for funds are adults in low-income households who own, co-own or simply live in the household in a one-flat or two-flat family house subject to the investment.

First contracts are expected to be concluded by the end the year, according to the ministry.
