Govt planning fresh borrowing

Ljubljana – The Finance Ministry has commissioned several international banks to manage a new, 10-year bond with maturity in 2031 and increase a 30-year bond issue due in 2050 in the near future, depending on the situation on financial markets.

Authorised to manage the issue were Barclays, BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole CIB, Deutsche Bank, HSBC and Slovenia’s NKBM, the ministry said on Monday.

The last time Slovenia borrowed on international markets was last October. During 2020 it raised roughly EUR 6 billion, a large part of it to finance stimulus measures amid the Covid-19 epidemic.

To implement this year’s state budget, the country needs to borrow EUR 5.67 billion, according to the budget financing programme the government adopted last month.

This would raise public debt EUR 36.62 billion, or 75% of the country’s GDP.
