Slovenia’s Covid-19 death toll passes 3,000

Ljubljana – Slovenia’s total of deaths among Covid-19 patients since the start of the pandemic has passed 3,000 after a further 24 died on Sunday. Another 426 people tested positive as test positivity rate dropped.

Government data show that 2,200 tests were performed on Sunday, 1,720 PCR and 480 antigen tests, with 368 and 58 coming back positive for test positivity rates of 21.4% and 12.1%, respectively.

The test positivity rate of the more reliable PCR tests has been falling since Tuesday when it peaked at 37.46%.

The number of patients hospitalised with the novel disease rose by 13 to 1,205 as 73 were newly admitted and 42 were discharged yesterday, as the number of those requiring intensive care dropped by six to 196.

Graphs shown by Jelko Kacin, the government’s Covid-19 spokesman, at Monday’s press briefing show hospitalisations have been rising, while deaths have been declining.

The graphs put the national 14-day incidence of infections per 100,000 residents at 1,151.8 as of 10 January and the seven-day incidence at 852.6 with the worst-affected region Posavska in the east, at 2,182.1 and 1,209.5, respectively.

Since the start of the pandemic, Slovenia has confirmed over 139,700 coronavirus cases, show data from the National Institute of Public Health.

According to tracker site covid-19.sledilnik.org, a total of 3,022 patients with Covid-19 have lost their lives.

NIJZ director Milan Krek presented analysis of data on Covid-19 fatalities and excess mortality for 2020, concluding that last year there were 2,891 excess Covid-19 deaths, of which 1,682 or 58% were care home residents.
