Slovenia Must Say Goodbye to Trump-Like Leader, Jansa

Under his authoritarian rule, he has dismantled state institutions, made brutal staffing turnovers and insulted journalists.  In recent days, he has been especially keen on quarrelling with foreign diplomats and politicians on Twitter. Following the example of his idol, Trump, a known pathological liar, Jansa has been forming his rule around false news and conspiracy theories that address the most paranoid elements of society.

In doing so, his only one goal is to generate mistrust and paranoia that create the right environment for the implementation of more extreme measures.

At times, the catastrophic COVID-19 situation appears convenient for him. Restrictive measures, such as curfews or bans on gatherings in public areas, are used to create confrontations with imaginary opponents.

The Court of Audit has meanwhile prepared a 250-page report on irregularities in the purchase of protective equipment during the first wave of the epidemic. It found that punishable offences may have occurred in 13 contracts for the purchase of PPE. The second wave has also been marked by controversial purchases, of unreliable quick COVID-19 tests, for example, which were delivered through connections with the youth organisation of Jansa's party.

Of course, they made money through this. Every deal concluded by Jansa's government on behalf of the state has the stench of corruption and irregularities.

People are losing patience and putting pressure on the opposition, which is filing a constructive no-confidence motion this week. The number-one hypocrites are members of the formerly liberal SMC coalition party, without which Jansa's government wouldn't have a majority.
