Sustainable development key component of change management, debate hears

Ljubljana – In adjusting to the profound changes brought about by the coronavirus epidemic, it is crucial to bear in mind sustainable development policies, a debate hosted by the Slovenian-German Chamber of Commerce heard on Tuesday.

“Business transformation and sustainable innovations are becoming a key element in transforming the current crisis into new business opportunities,” said the chamber’s president Gertrud Rantzen.

Economy Minister Zdravko Počivalšek stressed that sustainability and social responsibility were challenges for both businesses, the corporate sector at large and society as a whole.

He noted that sustainability was a component of Slovenia’s industrial strategy for 2021-2030, which revolves around green, creative and smart development.

Andrej Vizjak, the minister of the environment, added that sustainable and green solutions needed to be coupled with a development-oriented policy.

He said Slovenia’s recovery would be based on green and sustainable projects that will have positive spillover effects on society and promote digitalisation.

Similarly, German Ambassador to Slovenia Adrian Pollmann said that competitiveness, resilience and sustainability needed to be achieved at all levels, from politics to private companies and the civil society.

The debate was held as the chamber handed out its annual award for corporate social responsibility and sustainability to Lumar IG, a maker of prefabricated energy efficient homes.

Pollmann said the company was a role model in that it introduced a sustainable paradigm taking into account competitiveness as well as technological, social and environmental aspects.
