Health workers may be spectators at Biathlon Pokljuka

Ljubljana – The organisers of the Pokljuka Biathlon World Cup said on Wednesday they were working on having at least some spectators present at the competition despite the epidemic. They would like to invite immunised health workers to Pokljuka to have at least a few people cheer for the athletes and to show appreciation for their Covid-19 efforts.

If their plans materialise, the Pokljuka biathlon will be the first live sports event with in-person audience in Slovenia since spectator-free events became the new norm because of Covid-19.

“We’re still striving to bring in the spectators at least at a symbolic level, to see somebody cheering live and to enable those who already received two vaccine shots or those who recovered from Covid-19 to attend the contest and cheer for domestic and foreign biathletes,” said Jelko Kacin, the head of the Biathlon Pokljuka organisation committee as well as the chief coordinator of Slovenia’s vaccine drive.

He explained that such a gesture would be an expression of gratitude to those who had been on the front lines of the fight against Covid-19, adding that the health workers would represent all the spectators.

Allowing those who are immune to the disease to attend the world cup would pave the way for other sports events to once again welcome in-person spectators, Kacin said when presenting the anticipated world cup tournament.

Biathlon Pokljuka is to get under way in a fortnight and the preparations are going as planned, the organisers said.

There is more than enough snow on the Pokljuka Plateau in the north-west of the country and Kacin is confident everything would go smoothly. He wishes Slovenia’s team would bag a feat or two and that everybody would stay healthy.
