Report: Matej Tonin to temporarily take over at Health Ministry

Ljubljana – Defence Minister Matej Tonin is to temporarily take over the role of health minister from Prime Minister Janez Janša on Monday, the news portal 24ur.com reported on Wednesday, quoting unofficial information. Tonin reportedly already informed his closest team in the New Slovenia (NSi) party of this.

Tonin is to temporary take over at the Health Ministry, which has been led by Janša since the resignation of Health Minister Tomaž Gantar, but is to continue to serve as defence minister as well.

He reportedly informed his closest colleagues at the NSi about this and the party’s executive committee.

Gantar stepped down as health minister on 18 December 2020 after his Pensioners’ Party (DeSUS) left the coalition.

It is not yet clear which of the coalition parties will put forward a candidate for the new health minister.

Janša said at the end of last year that a new minister would be appointed at the beginning of this year. He asserted that work at the ministry was running smoothly.
