LIVE: Bulgarian Health Authorities Warn of New Peak of Covid-19 in Three Weeks

The health authorities forecast a new spike in Covid-19 morbidity in Bulgaria, announced Head of the National Operational Staff, Major General Ventsislav Mutafchiiski during the weekly briefing at the Council of Ministers.

Gen. Mutafchiiski appealed to medical professionals to get prepared for "what awaits us" and urged people to abide by prevention measures. He said that as unpleasant as it may be for him to take on the role of herald of bad news, he can't afford not to report facts.

'Just because some things are allowed doesn't mean they're safe. I've never said gyms were safe places. On the contrary - they are the most dangerous," the Chief of Staff said.

"The scenarios show that in about seven weeks we have reached the peak in the second wave. But now we don't have seven weeks, we probably have three," said Gen. Mutafchiiski.

Health Minister Prof . Kostadin Angelov explained that the Headquarters are content with what has been achieved so far. The results gave grounds to show a reasonable dose of optimism, but not lightheartedness, as what has been achieved is very fragile.

"Europe is in a stalemate and preparing for a third wave. I don't want us to be careless, but ready for a third wave, if it surges in our country at all with the force it has in the rest of Europe," the health minister said.

Prof. Angelov called on the citizens to show reason and be calm. He reported a slight change in the virus dynamics in Sofia, so new data will be monitored on a 12-hour basis and each trend will be analyzed. Health authorities are ready to take action if necessary.
