Lampič wins cross-country sprint bronze at world championships

Oberstdorf – Slovenian cross-country skier Anamarija Lampič won the bronze medal in the women’s classical sprint at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Germany’s Oberstdorf on Thursday. She missed out on the silver medal by a mere 0.02 seconds.

The gold went to Jonna Sundling of Sweden, who was followed by Maiken Caspersen Falla of Norway (+2.32 seconds), and the 25-year-old Slovenian (+2.35 seconds).

This is a second medal at world championships for Lampič, coming after the silver in the team sprint in 2019 in Seefeld.

It is the tenth medal for Slovenia at the Nordic world ski championships and the third individual after Petra Majdič won silver in 2007 and bronze in 2011.

Lampič, the 2020 Slovenian female athlete of the year, has already been awarded the small crystal globe as the overall World Cup winner in the women’s sprint discipline as the season has been cut short.

“The finish lane is very long, but if it was a meter longer, I would have won silver today. But bronze is great as well. The season has been perfect,” she told the public broadcaster RTV Slovenija after the race.

“I could not have wished more. Urevc will also make a come-back, although she had a bad day today, I’m sure about that. I believe in her and we can achieve something in the team sprint on Sunday,” she said about her team mate Eva Urevc.

Urevc dropped out in the quarter-finals. “The silent goal has not been achieved and I’m not satisfied. It was really a bad run. I did not feel very good and there was no real energy,” the 25-year-old told Slovenian reporters.
