Electronic identification and trust services bill adopted

Ljubljana – The government has confirmed an electronic identification and trust services act, legislation that will make it possible to use the new biometric ID cards as electronic identification.

The legislation creates the national legal basis for trust services by transposing the 2014 EU directive on electronic identification and trust services, the Government Communications Office said.

It will allow Slovenia to register its national electronic identification scheme for cross-border services, which means Slovenian users will have access to public sector e-services on the EU’s internal market.

Slovenian nationals, and in some cases foreign nationals, will be able to get an electronic identity, whereas companies as well as natural persons will be able to apply for unique identifiers.

The new bill comes a month after the National Assembly passed legislation on biometric identity cards, which will be equipped with special chips for secure digital certificates.

Together, the two laws will make it possible to use ID cards as a means of electronic identification.
