Poll shows govt support keeps falling

Ljubljana – The Vox Populi poll for April shows support for the government continues to fall while there are also more respondents who consider its performance successful. The ruling Democrats (SDS) continued to poll highest among political parties whereas over a fifth of the respondents had problems with access to healthcare during the Covid epidemic.

67.3% of those polled labelled the government’s performance as unsuccessful, up 0.1 of a percentage point on March and the lowest since it came into office in March 2020.

However, the share of those who said the government was successful also increased, by 0.9% of a point, to 29.5%.

If an election was held on Sunday, 19% would vote for the ruling SDS, up 0.1 of a point, with the opposition Social Democrats (SD) second with 13.2%, up from 12.9%.

The opposition Marjan Šarec List (LMŠ) would win 10.1%, up from 8.8%, and the coalition New Slovenia (NSi) 7.4%, up 3.2 points to push the opposition Left to fourth spot.

The Left lost 0.8 of a point to 6.9% over March, the Alenka Bratušek Party (SAB) lost 0.2 of a point to 3.6%, with the other parliamentary parties polling much below 1%.

The poll also showed a drop in undecided voters – from 30.3% to 28.7%, and a rise in those who would not go to the polls – from 6.2% to 7.4%.

As a result, the SDS would win 28 seats in the 90-member parliament, the SD 19, the LMŠ 15, the NSi eleven, the Left ten and the SAB five.

The respondents were also asked about potential difficulties in accessing healthcare services, which were considerable in the first wave of the epidemic in spring 2020.

Almost 21% had problems accessing doctors for conditions not related to Covid-19, of whom 77% with access to their GP and some 22% with getting a referral.

Over 44% of those who had problems with healthcare access had had their appointment cancelled due to the epidemic.

MEP Ljudmila Novak from the NSi continued to top the popularity rankings after unseating President Borut Pahor as the most popular politician in February, with MEP and SD leader Tanja Fajon placing third.

The Vox Populi is a joint public opinion poll of the newspapers Dnevnik and Večer. It was carried out by pollster Ninamedia between 13 and 15 April among 700 adults.
