Slovenia supports UEFA in opposition to European Superliga

Ljubljana – The Slovenian Football Association (NZS) has responded to the decision of twelve major European clubs to establish the European Superliga, saying it fully supports the efforts of the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) for maintaining a balance in European football.

“Elite, top-level football is to a large extent dependent on amateur football – on the hard work of smaller clubs that are oriented towards developing and preparing players for playing at a level required by top football.”

In Monday’s press release, NZS president Radenko Mijatović added that “due to the greed of certain individuals, the Superliga will undermine this balance and it may happen soon that football will take the path of some other team sports.”

This comes after the competition was made official today, with 12 founding clubs, for now: AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham.

“We know from these examples that divisions to different elite leagues has brought nothing but some short-term financial benefits. At this moment, we must stay united and condemn such acts in the strictest terms,” Mijatović said.

At the same time, “we need to take care of the future of football and all children who genuinely look up to their football idols with admiration,” he added.

The UEFA has said that it and member associations remain united in the “efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever.”
