Logar thinks Slovenia and Andorra could boost coop in agriculture, high-tech

Ljubljana – Foreign Minister Anže Logar talked to Andorran Foreign Minister Maria Ubach Font on Friday, with the pair agreeing that the cooperation between Slovenia and Andorra could be enhanced. Logar proposed agriculture and high-tech as the areas with the most potential.

According to Logar, bilateral relations between the two countries are currently at a low level but there are many opportunities to change that.

The minister thinks Slovenia and Andorra could cooperate more in agriculture, where Slovenia has a high-quality production of organic food and Andorra imports most of the products, and in high-tech.

Ubach Font also confirmed the desire to boost cooperation and pointed to Slovenia’s role in development of artificial intelligence (AI), as Ljubljana hosts UNESCO’s International Research Centre On Artificial Intelligence. She is to visit the centre later today.

Among the challenges to bilateral relations, Logar mentioned double taxation. Andorra has bilateral agreements on avoidance of double taxation with several EU countries and Logar said today Slovenia would study all possibilities for bringing the countries’ fiscal systems closer together.

Logar also presented the priorities of Slovenia’s EU presidency in the second half of the year to the minister. During the country’s presidency, an important part of negotiations will be held on the EU accession agreement with Monaco, Andorra and San Marino.

The agreement envisages the three countries joining the EU internal market and it was initially expected to be finalised in the first half of the year.

The Andorran minister labelled today’s meeting especially important because of the upcoming Slovenia’s EU presidency. She also used the opportunity to invite Logar to Andorra.

Ubach Font was also received today by parliamentary Speaker Igor Zorčič, with the pair agreeing that there were many opportunities to upgrade bilateral relations in many fields, including business, AI, agriculture and tourism.

The National Assembly added in the press release that Zorčič had also called for enhanced inter-parliamentary cooperation, the form of which would, however, depend on the epidemiological situation.
