Vizjak and Timmermans review Slovenian presidency’s environment priorities

Ljubljana – Environment Minister Andrej Vizjak held a virtual meeting with European Commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans on Friday to present the priorities of Slovenia’s presidency of the Council of the EU concerning the environment and climate change. They also touched on the Fit for 55 package and the Glasgow climate conference in November.

According to the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, Vizjak said Slovenia would resume steps towards realising the goal of the EU preserving its leading role globally in the combat against climate change and to preserve biodiversity.

Slovenia will prepare an informal session of environment ministers in July to launch debate on Fit for 55, a legislative package under the European Green Deal that the European Commission is due to put forward in mid-July.

The package will revise measures of environmental and other policies in order to achieve climate goals for 2030 such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% compared with the 1990 levels.

The goal is also important in light of the COP26 climate conference to be held in Glasgow, Scotland in November. The ministry expects the event to make a major step in international talks to strengthen commitments at the global level.

Vizjak and Timmermans, who is also in charge of the European Green Deal, agreed the Slovenian presidency would be facing major demanding challenges in the area of climate change.

Vizjak thanked Timmermans for their good discussion in anticipation of what he expects will be excellent cooperation during Slovenia’s presidency spell, according to the release from the ministry.
