Vaccine supply expected to improve as of next week

Ljubljana – After Slovenia’s vaccination centres reported they had been receiving fewer Covid-19 vaccines this week than they have ordered, the national vaccination logistics coordinator said on Wednesday that more doses would be available in June, and that a major shipment of the AstraZeneca vaccine was expected this Friday.

Jelko Kacin said that the most important and, until recently the most reliable supplier Pfizer/BioNTech had recently changed its practice when it comes to announcing shipments of the vaccine.

For some time, the supplier has been announcing deliveries only two weeks in advance, and long-term deliveries are no longer announced, Kacin said at the daily Covid-19 government briefing.

This comes after the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) said it was able to deliver this week to vaccination centres less than two-thirds of all ordered doses. Nearly two-thirds of all doses are currently being used for second jabs.

According to Kacin, the situation is expected to improve significantly next week, and two-thirds of all doses could again be intended for first jabs. The number of doses will also be much higher, as there will be almost three times more doses for first jabs than this week.

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has already been approved in Canada and the US for vaccination of children aged 12-15, and this option is being examined by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which could take a decision by the end of this week.

Kacin said that it could perhaps become a new vaccine for this age group.
