Slovenia’s Jansa is at War With Reason and the World

As head of a minority coalition (currently supported in parliament by part of the opposition), Jansa is taking advantage of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the upcoming EU presidency to maintain his grip on power.

Under the pretext that the six-month presidency requires political stability and with constant calls for a state-building stance and unity, Jansa is trying to maintain the status quo and avoid at all costs early elections that he says would embarrass the country before the European public.

The paradox is that practically not a day goes by that he does not personally provoke some excess at home or in Europe, embarrassing both himself and Slovenia.

Jansa the 'victim'

When mainstream media (domestic and global) do not report on the conspiracies Jansa wants to talk about, he and his supporters create the belief that the mainstream media are biased and part of the same conspiracy on which it does not want to report.

Like Trump, Jansa describes mainstream media as a fabricator of fake news. He communicates via Twitter or appears on his party's television channel, where he can communicate by selectively choosing the arguments to form his own truth.

This is what he wanted to do in Brussels, at the meeting of the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group. When the chair Sophie in 't Veld did not let him, he left the meeting like a child offended that the game did not follow the rules he had set.

For the Slovenian public, Jansa bases his political strategy on anti-communism and his attitude to the past. He speaks of an unfinished transition and advocates for a "second republic", constantly emphasising the shortcomings of the former Yugoslav regime.
