Electricity usage up 19.2 percent in May

Turkey's electricity consumption increased by 19.2 percent in May, compared to the same month of 2020, according to the latest data released by the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry.

The country's power consumption reached 24.78 billion kilowatt-hours last month and electricity production also increased by 20.3 percent to 24.90 billion kilowatt-hours compared to May 2020.

Out of May's total production, hydro plants generated 23.3 percent while 27.6 percent was derived from natural gas and 15.84 percent from local coal.

The share of imported coal plants in electricity generation was 13.86 percent. Wind plants generated 8.32 percent and the remaining share came from geothermal, fuel oil and biogas plants.

Last month, Turkey's electricity imports from neighboring countries increased by around 1.33 percent to 213.51 million kilowatt-hours compared to 210.70 million kilowatt-hours in May 2020.

Electricity exports increased by around 177 percent to 333.93 million kilowatt-hours.

Turkey's total installed power capacity reached 97.38 gigawatts as of the end of April 2021, according to official figures.
