140th anniversary of Romanian-Spanish diplomatic ties celebrated in Bucharest

Romanian and Spanish officials, representatives of the Cervantes Institute, as well as diplomats, historians, army staff, researchers and experts on Tuesday attended in the Marble Hall of the Palace of the National Military Club in Bucharest a roundtable conference on the 140th anniversary of Romanian-Spanish diplomatic ties. The event was also attended by senior defense policy, planning and international affairs with Romania's Defence Ministry (MApN) Simona Cojocaru. It was organised by MApN's Institute for Political Defence and Military History in collaboration with the National Archives of Romania, the Diplomatic Archives of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Library of the Romanian Chief of Defence's Office. According to a MApN press statement, the event, held in a hybrid in person and virtual attendance format, was dedicated to the 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Romania and Spain, an event that provided new value to the historical relationships between the two nations that are part of the large Romance family. The roundtable conference was attended by Manuel Larrotcha Parada, the ambassador of Spain to Romania, as well as Spanish officers from multinational commands based in Romania. Senior official Cojocaru reiterated the importance of the strategic partnership between the two countries, with Romania and Spain cooperating closely in theaters of war, as well as in promoting joint initiatives and projects aimed at furthering regional and international stability and security. "The strong connection between the two nations, influenced by Latin origins and linguistic and cultural affinities, naturally led to a deep political and diplomatic rapprochement," Cojocaru added. The conference analysed connections and bonds that throughout history have left their mark on the destiny of the two nations. Bilateral co-operation in the areas of economy, defence, local public administration, home affairs, education and culture was also appreciated. For the conference, two exhibitions of historical documents and photographs were mounted at the Palace of the National Military Club with support from the Diplomatic Archives of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Archives of Romania.
