Slovenia ranks 9th in Agenda 2030 implementation

Ljubljana – Slovenia ranks 9th among 165 countries in the implementation of the Agenda 2030 sustainable development goals, according to a report complied by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network under the wings of the UN, and the Bertelsmann Stiftung foundation and the Cambridge University Press. Last year, it ranked 12th.

Among the 17 goals, Slovenia has been the most successful in eradicating extreme forms of poverty, providing for dignified work and economic growth, and the guaranteeing of peace, justice, and strong institutions.

The list is topped by Finland, Sweden and Denmark as the most successful countries, while Central African Republic is at the very bottom.

According to the Government Office for Development and Cohesion, some challenges remain but Slovenia is happy to be graded better than for example Switzerland (16th), Italy (26th) or Luxenbourg (42nd).

The report suggests Slovenia’s top challenges are eradication of hunger, responsible consumption and production, and climate measures.

While the Covid-19 pandemic has halted efforts for sustainable development in most countries, Slovenia improved its result in the past year, climbing from the 12th to the 9th place.

Achieving sustainable development goals can contribute to sustainable, inclusive and resilient post-Covid recovery, the authors of the report said.

The annual report is issued around the time of the UN political forum in New York dedicated to sustainable development. The forum, scheduled for 6-15 July, will also be attended by Slovenian officials, the Government Office for Development and Cohesion said.

During its EU presidency in the second half of the year, Slovenia and the European Commission will host an event discussing sustainable development goals, post-pandemic recovery and the green and digital transformation, the office added.
