Zorčič strengthening bilateral relations in Serbia

Belgrade – Parliamentary Speaker Igor Zorčič is wrapping up a two-day official visit to Serbia during which he met senior Serbian officials. In a statement for the STA, he labelled relations between Slovenia and Serbia as very good in all fields of cooperation – from business to culture and politics.

Zorčič labelled the meetings as “very constructive and positively-oriented”. “We’ve touched on numerous issues concerning bilateral cooperation but also regional and global issues, such as Afghanistan,” he said.

“At the political level, the two countries have been cooperating both at the government and parliamentary levels. Based on the agreements reached we will cooperate in the future as well,” the speaker said.

Zorčič met Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Ana Brnabić and Foreign Minister Nikola Selaković today.

Vučić, who will attend the Bled Strategic Forum (BSF) in Slovenia next week, stressed the importance of friendship and partnership between the countries and said he expected Slovenia to continue to support the EU enlargement to the Western Balkans during its EU presidency.

Zorčič assured him that this was one of the priorities of the Slovenian presidency. He noted that Slovenia would host an EU-Western Balkans summit in October, reported the Serbian press agency Tanjug.

Selaković expressed interest after the meeting for further strengthening of top-level cooperation and for regular joint sessions of the countries’ governments.

The agenda of the talks also included the dialogue between Belgrade and Prishtina on normalisation of relations, the status of the Serbian community in Slovenia, and economic cooperation between Slovenia and Serbia, according to Tanjug.

On the first day of the visit, Zorčič met his host Ivica Dačić and members of the parliamentary committees for European integration and for foreign affairs.

A meeting with representatives of some of the 1,500 Slovenian companies operating in Serbia was also held.

Before concluding his visit today, Zorčič will also meet representatives of the Slovenian community in Serbia and the bishop of Belgrade, Stanislav Hočevar, he told the STA.
