Slovenia sending blankets, sleeping bags to quake-hit Haiti

Ljubljana – Slovenia will send aid to Haiti, which has recently been hit by a strong earthquake. The shipment of blankets and sleeping bags is worth EUR 140,000, including transport to the Caribbean country.

The decision to send aid through the EU civil protection mechanism was taken by the government at Thursday’s session, the Government Communication Office said in a press release.

Slovenia’s aid to Haiti includes 1,200 blankets and 2,400 sleeping bags, with the value of the material aid estimated at EUR 90,000 and the price of transport at EUR 50,000.

Haiti was hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake on 14 August, with the epicentre approximately 150 kilometres from the capital of Port-au-Prince. More than 2,200 people lost their lives, 12,000 were injured, and 344 are still missing.

The earthquake also caused significant material damage – according to the Slovenian Defence Ministry, some 61,000 houses were destroyed and over 76,000 were damaged.
