Romania's Begu, Mitu, Olaru progress to US Open women's doubles second round

Three Romanian tennis players: Irina Begu, Andreea Mitu and Raluca Olaru advanced to the second round of the women's doubles event at the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, after wins on Thursday in New York. Irina Begu and Andreea Mitu beat the Caroline Garcia (France) / Nadia Podoroska (Argentina) duo 6-4 7-6 (4), in an hour and 45 minutes. The next opponents will be the winners of the match between Americans Lauren Davis/Ingrid Neel and N.10 Caroline Dolehide (USA) / Storm Sanders (Australia). N.12 Olaru and Ukrainian Nadiia Kichenok got their win over Sania Mirza (India)/CoCo Vandeweghe (USA), 4-6 6-4 6-3, in almost two hours (1 h 56 min). In the second round, Olaru-Kichenok will play the pairing that will win the match Andrea Petkovic (Germany)/Ajla Tomljanovic (Australia) v. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia)/ Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan). Also today, Monica Niculescu and Gabriela Ruse defeated Polona Hercog (Slovenia Anastasija Sevastova (Latvia) in the first round, 6-1 5-7 7-5. The next opponents will be Magda Linette (Poland) and Bernarda Pera (USA), who produced a stunner against N.2 Barbora Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova, whom they defeated 6-3 6-4.
