Over 700 new infections, two deaths as Covid hospitalisations climb

Ljubljana – Slovenia recorded well over 700 new coronavirus infections for a second time this week as 741 cases were reported for Friday. This was as hospitalisations and intensive case cases climbed to what would be a third tier of restrictions under a new emerging government Covid rules strategy. Two patients died.

Figures released this morning by the National Institute of Public Heath (NIJZ) show Friday’s case count brings the rolling 7-day average to 531, up thirty from the day before.

The cumulative 14-day incidence per 100,000 residents rose by 17 to 314 as the estimated number of active cases in the country increased to 6,682, up by more than 350 from the day before.

The test positivity rate yesterday was a high 19.8%.

However, the data to watch out for are Covid-19 hospitalisations and in particular the number of ICU cases, which are to guide restrictions under as a new tiered approach the government is to adopt shortly.

Data from the government and Covid tracker site show hospitalisations standing at 189 this morning after 32 patients were admitted yesterday and 21 were discharged, while two patients died.

The number of ICU cases climbed to 44, which under a new plan of Covid-19 containment measures proposed by the government advisory group would put the country into a third tier.

While Covid-free private gatherings would already be limited to 50 under the second tier, when ICU cases were between 20 and 43, the third tier would also bring a requirement for older primary pupils, secondary school and university students who have not been tested or recovered from Covid to get self-tested once a week, among other things.
