Slovenia in focus of Zagreb world literature festival

Zagreb – Slovenian literature will be in focus as the 9th Festival of World Literature gets under way in Zagreb on Sunday evening. Singer songwriter and author Zoran Predin is to appear at the opening ceremony.

The festival will feature several Slovenian authors among many literary stars from a total of 16 countries, including Belarusian Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich.

According to organizers, Predin will talk about his very successful debut novel Mongolske Pege (Mongolian Freckles).

The festival will also see the launch of a Croatian translation of The Door of No Return (Vrata Nepovrata), an epic poem by Boris A. Novak, festival director Seid Serdarević announced in an interview with the Croatian radio on Friday.

Other Slovenian authors to be featured are Bronja Žakelj, Veronika Simoniti and Dijana Matković, whose work Serdarević noted focuses on memories and the situation of women.

Another Slovenian author expected at the festival is Jasmin B. Frelih.

Serdarević said Slovenian and Croatian literatures were very close, and Slovenian literature was one of the most translated in Croatia.

One of the main reasons for Slovenia to be in the focus of the festival is that it will be a guest of honour at the 2023 Frankfurt Book Fair.

The Slovenian Embassy in Zagreb is one of the sponsors of the Zagreb festival.
