Lesbian festival opens with US documentary

Ljubljana – The 7th Lesbian Quarter festival is kicking off on Tuesday evening, bringing film, music, literary events, an exhibition and an academic talk at several locations in Ljubljana until Friday.

The festival will open with a screening of the 1990s US documentary BloodSisters: Leather, Dykes and Sadomasochism at the Slovenian Cinematheque, to be followed by an online talk with its director Michelle Handelman.

An insight into the lesbian activism in Slovenia in the 1980s will be provided at an exhibition which opens on Wednesday in the courtyard of the Institute of Recent History. With it, the ŠKUC Association, the organiser of the festival, wants to announce the digitalisation of ŠKUC’s LGBT archives since 1984.

Musician and poet Ana Resnik will give a concert at the ŠKUC Gallery on Wednesday and hip-hop and r&b singer Masayah at the Tiffany Club on Friday.

Literature will feature prominently, with Croatian author Nora Verde presenting her Slovenian translation of short stories About Love, Beating and Revolution, while Slovenia’s Nataša Sukič and Suzana Tratnik will present their novels Amplitude and Pontoon Bridge.

Friday’s talk at the ŠKUC Gallery will discuss “the theory and practice of resistance, the possibility of a different future” and provide “a critical response to ‘the white straight Western time'”.

In cooperation with Alternative Tours, lesbian writer and activist Suzana Tratnik will give a lesbian tour of Ljubljana on Friday.

The festival will close with a screening of Nun of My Business, an award-winning Croatian documentary about two ex-nuns who become a lesbian couple.
