Ljubljana shortlisted for 2022 European Capital of Smart Tourism

Brussels – The Slovenian capital of Ljubljana is among the seven shortlisted cities vying for the title of the 2022 European Capital of Smart Tourism, the European Commission has announced.

Ljubljana is in the company of Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Dublin, Florence, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia, shortlisted by a group of independent experts from 30 applicants from 16 European countries.

The seven cities will now present their bids to a European jury, which will declare two winners of the title in November, the organisers have said.

The winning cities will receive in 2022 communication support that will help promote their brands, including a promotional video, and a sculpture marking the title of the European Capital of Smart Tourism will be inaugurated.

The winners will also be supported with additional promotional activities that are expected to raise their profile at the EU level.

The EU initiative recognises achievements of cities as tourism destinations in categories such as accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation, cultural heritage and creativity.

The aim is to encourage smart tourism in the EU and innovative, sustainable and inclusive development of tourism and expand and facilitate exchange of best practice.

This will be the third time that the title will be awarded to European cities after it was conferred to Helsinki and Lyon in 2019 and to Gothenburg and Malaga in 2020.
