Gheorghita: We consider the administration of dose 3 to people prone to severe forms or involved in critical activities

The head of the National Committee for the Coordination of Vaccination Activities (CNCAV) against COVID-19, Valeriu Gheorghita, said on Tuesday that the authorities are considering administering the third dose of vaccine to people vulnerable or involved in "critical activities" of pandemic management. "We consider, first of all, the administration of a dose 3 to categories of people prone to severe forms of the disease, with a high risk of not generating a sufficiently high immune response after the first vaccination schedule - and here are included the categories of people with immunosuppression conditions, but also people who by the nature of the profession have an increased risk of illness and who are involved in activities critical to pandemic management, such as medical staff," Gheorghita said at a press conference. The military doctor added that, "taking into account the specific situation in Romania, namely a vaccination coverage rate somewhere in a third of the eligible population, over the age of 12, to control the spread of the infection among the population, the focus should be on further increase in the vaccination coverage rate, in parallel with the strengthening of the immune response to vulnerable people who have already received the first vaccination scheme." Thus, the head of CNCAV pointed out that most studies continue to show that the effectiveness of immunization against severe cases, hospitalization and death is still high.
