SDS requests debate on protection of legal order in face of protests

Ljubljana – The senior coalition Democrats (SDS) filed a request on Wednesday for an emergency session of the parliamentary interior affairs and justice committees to discuss the duties of law enforcement in the protection of the legal order and democratic postulates in the face of recent unannounced protests.

The SDS said that the organising of the protests had started before the current government was formed and continued as the Covid-19 epidemic peaked. Death threats to Prime Minister Janez Janša and SDS supporters could be heard at the rallies, which recently turned into violent riots, the party said.

Although the protests are not announced by any organisers, it is clear that certain publicly exposed individuals organise them, the SDS said, pointing to the Resni.ca party of Zoran Stevanovič and Jaša Jenull as the organiser of the Friday protests.

Members of various criminal groups also responded to the calls by different groups, as they can be seen at the rallies, the party said.

The party expects the top representatives of the police, state prosecution, courts and the State Attorney’s Office to immediately act against the organisers of the unreported rallies and individual violent protesters.

The SDS proposes launching minor offence, criminal and civil proceedings against them.

It also proposed that the two committees urge the Ljubljana administrative unit to ban rallies as soon as possible under Article 6 of the public assembly act, which says that such a move can be taken for rallies where criminal acts take place or where people are being urged to do criminal acts.
