Russia Declares North Macedonia Diplomat Persona non Grata

The Russian foreign ministry has declared a Macedonian diplomat as persona non grata and expelled them from their role in the Macedonian embassy in Moscow and the country.

Olivera Chaushevska-Dimovska was the charge d'affaires of North Macedonia at the country's embassy.

A statement from the Russian foreign minister reads that the move was a retaliation to a decision taken in August by the North Macedonian side to declare a diplomat at the Russian Embassy in Skopje persona non grata.

On 17 August, North Macedonia's Foreign Ministry expelled a Russian deputy military attache for allegedly "inappropriate" diplomatic activities.

Earlier this year, North Macedonia deported another Russian diplomat in protest against the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia Skripal in the UK in 2018.

"The decision of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expel a diplomat who was recently delegated to the Russian Federation is a retaliatory political decision without any grounds," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Skopje said.
