Slovenia calls for abolishing of death penalty on World Day Against the Death Penalty

Ljubljana – Slovenia called on the countries that still have the death penality to fully abolish it on World Day Against the Death Penalty. The death penalty, which Slovenia firmly opposes is inhumane, cruel, demining and final form of punishment, the Foreign Ministry wrote on Sunday.

As this year’s World Day Against the Death Penalty is dedicated to women who have been sentenced to death or executed and those who have been exonerated, the ministry noted that in some countries women were being discriminated because of their gender and thus put in a worse position than men.

“Slovenia strives for global abolishment of the death penalty, as this is a form of punishment for which no positive effect has been proven as regards the prevention of crime and which does not bring any closing to the victims or their relatives,” the ministry said.

It added that Slovenia welcomed the strengthening of efforts against the death penalty and called on Belarus as the only European country with the death penalty to introduce an official moratorium on executions as the first step towards abolishment.

Slovenia supports all resolutions adopted both at the UN General Assembly and the Human Rights Council advocating moratorium on or full abolishment of the death penalty.

Slovenia also calls on all countries that have not ratified the second optional protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aiming at the abolition of the death penalty, to do so.
