Primorske says Slovenian police enjoy low level of autonomy

Koper – Primorske Novice says in Monday’s commentary that the Slovenian police have never enjoyed the level of autonomy enjoyed by police forces in developed countries, adding that the morale in the force has never been so low and the system never so broken.

You do not have to be an expert to establish that something that has never happened before is happening in the Slovenian police, the newspaper says.

The Interior Ministry is dismissing people and appointing new people to leading positions, politicians compete in politicising every move made by the police, and the relevant minister is insulting police officers.

Insiders on the police confirm that the morale has never been so low and the system never so broken, as if those who create the new image of the police seriously believe that the police had been incapable before the arrival of the new government.

“The Slovenian police have never enjoyed the level of autonomy enjoyed by police forces in developed countries,” Primorske Novice says, noting that nobody asked criminal police officers for an opinion when the new penal code was being written.

What is happening now is only a consequence of the attitude of the authorities towards the police, which has been a remnant from the past political system, under which a police officers does not need to think, but only execute orders.

“With such conduct, police is losing all the trust of people that they have gained so far. Politics is not losing trust, as it has lost all of it long ago. But like a stick, a baton also has two ends,” concludes the commentary Baton also Has Two Ends.
