Dnevnik reserved about COP26

Ljubljana – Looking at the start of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), Dnevnik expresses reservations in Saturday’s commentary about the probability of success.

Every country is entering the talks with its own interests, which are understandable from a national point of view but damaging in the long-term if the environment becomes less liveable due to unbridled climate change and social unrest.

Large producers of fossil fuels want to preserve their revenue sources for as long as possible. The goals of China, the world’s largest producer of black coal, and Russia with its reserves of natural gas are similar but “unsustainable for humanity”.

According to Dnevnik, achieving climate neutrality in 2060 is a pragmatic goal, but one that means efforts to arrest climate change will not have been successful.

Greta Thunberg’s question about whether the G20 and COP26 will be another “blah, blah, blah” conference will be answered with political will and depth of purse strings in the coming two weeks, the paper concludes in Political Will and Depth of Purse Strings.
