House of the Carniolan Honey Bee opens in Višnja Gora

Višnja Gora – The House of the Carniolan Honey Bee was launched on Wednesday in the town of Višnja Gora. Housed in a converted school, it will be dedicated to presenting the heritage of the Carniolan bee and innovative beekeeping solutions.

The House of the Carniolan Honey Bee, which includes the Apilab centre of innovative beekeeping technologies, was a challenging and important project that will combine tradition and the future, Prime Minister Janez Janša said in his keynote.

He also recalled that more than 10,000 people in Slovenia were involved in beekeeping, and that beekeeping was much more than a hobby and an economic activity. “It is a life-sustaining activity,” he said.

According to Ivančna Gorica Mayor Dušan Strnad, the municipality is very pleased with the idea and initiative to convert the former old school into the House of the Carniolan Bee.

The municipality expects it to be of great importance for the revitalisation of the town centre of Višnja Gora, as well as for tourism, business and jobs in the region.

The newly established House of the Carniolan Bee is home to the Apilab centre, a tourist information centre and a beekeeping museum, while it will also feature a café and a honey shop.

A teaching apiary has been set up in the immediate vicinity as well, while the municipality is planning to add overnight accommodation and a centre for the development of entrepreneurship.

The entire project cost EUR 3.5 million, of which around EUR 2 million came from the European Regional Development Fund, around EUR 700,000 from the state budget, and the rest was provided by the municipality.
