Janša receives European bishops and church representatives

Ljubljana – Prime Minister Janez Janša met with representatives of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the EU (COMECE) and the Conference of European Churches (CEC) on Friday. They discussed the global role of the EU, religious freedom and the ongoing pandemic, said the PM’s office and the Slovenian Bishops’ Conference (SŠK).

The meeting hosted by Janša was attended by COMECE president and the archbishop of Luxembourg, cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, president of the CEC Christian Krieger, Archbishop of Ljubljana Stanislav Zore, evangelical bishop Leon Novak and other representatives of both Bishops’ Conferences.

The attendees exchanged views on the priorities of the Slovenian EU presidency, recovery from the pandemic, resilience in the light of possible future crises, values and religious freedom in the EU and beyond.

They also discussed the global role of the EU, with the aim of creating a more peaceful, just and sustainable post-pandemic world.

The COMECE president presented the prime minister with a document entitled Together. Resilient. Europe., which aims to aid Slovenia in its EU presidency with substantial observations and propositions, Janša’s office said.

After meeting with PM Janša, the COMECE and CEC representatives were also received at the Ljubljana archdiocese by Archbishop Stanislav Zore.

COMECE is the organisation that brings together Bishops’ Conferences across the EU and follows political processes that might be relevant for the Catholic Church, as explained by the SŠK.

Meanwhile, the CEC brings together 114 Orthodox, Protestant and Anglican churches from Europe to promote peace, work for the common good and for the unity of the church.

Both COMECE and CEC are committed to working towards a more peaceful, prosperous, socially just, inclusive and sustainable EU, added the SŠK.
