Slovenia’s Olympic flag bearer tests positive for Covid

Beijing – Slovenian snowboarder Žan Košir, who was chosen as one of Slovenia’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing on 4 February, has tested positive for coronavirus upon arriving in China, which was later confirmed with another test.

“The Olympic team management followed the organisers’ instructions and the athlete is now isolated,” the Slovenian delegation said, adding that Košir is otherwise well and has had no symptoms so far.

According to the protocol, Košir will now have to stay in a separate hotel and self-isolate until he can present two negative PCR tests in the space of 24 hours.

The 37-year-old from Tržič is one of Slovenia’s most successful Winter Olympians and one of the best snowboarders in the Alpine snow disciplines. At the Olympics in 2014 and 2018, he won two bronze medals and one silver medal for Slovenia.

He has been picked to be Slovenia’s flag bearer at the Olympics opening ceremony along with skier Ilka Štuhec.
