Slovenia’s fall in CO2 emissions in Q3 2021 biggest in EU

Luxembourg – Slovenia saw the biggest decline in greenhouse gas emissions in the EU in the third quarter of 2021 when compared to the same quarter a year before even as emissions across the bloc increased to slightly below pre-pandemic levels, Eurostat data shows.

Slovenia was one of only three EU countries whose emissions decreased in the period, by 2.6% year-on-year, along with Luxembourg (-2.3%) and the Netherlands (-1.6%), shows the report by the EU’s statistics office.

On the whole economy greenhouse gas emissions in the EU totalled 881 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents in the third quarter of 2021, which is slightly below pre-pandemic levels and 6% up from the third quarter of 2020.

In the third quarter of 2019, before stores, factories and businesses across the globe were shut down to prevent the spread of coronavirus, emissions amounted to 891 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents.

The year-on-year increase is largely attributed to the effect of the economic rebound after the sharp decrease of activity in the same quarter of 2020 due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Most greenhouse gas emissions were produced by manufacturing (23%), electricity supply (21%), and households and agriculture (14% each).

Bulgaria saw the biggest increase in emissions in the third quarter of last year, at an annual rate of 22.7%.

According to Eurostat, the long-term trend in EU greenhouse gas emissions is that of a steady reduction towards the EU targets.
