NBA player Goran Dragić signs with Brooklyn Nets

New York – Goran Dragić, widely regarded as one of Slovenia’s best basketball players ever, has signed a new contract until the end of this season and will move to the Brooklyn Nets, said the BDA Sports International management agency. At the age of 35, this will be Dragić’s fifth team in the NBA.

Dragić started this season as a Toronto Raptors player, but has not actually played a game since November after he left the team for personal reasons. He was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in the beginning of February, then negotiated a contract buyout just a few days later.

After this year’s contract conundrum and losing in the final with the Miami Heat in 2020, Dragić’s wish to get another chance to win an NBA title before the end of his career will now come true.

The Nets are a team based in the New York borough of Brooklyn and are led by Steve Nash, who was a mentor to Dragić upon his arrival to the NBA when he first signed for the Phoenix Suns 14 years ago.

They were among the main favourites for the title before this season. In the NBA’s “power rankings” at the start of the season, the team from Brooklyn was second only to last season’s champions, the Milwaukee Bucks.

But much has changed for the Nets during the last few months, as almost all of their biggest stars have had issues on and off the court. They currently sit 8th in the NBA Eastern Conference and are on the brink of elimination.

They have now enlisted Dragić, who averages 13.9 points and 4.8 assists per game in 872 games played in the NBA, to help the team improve and potentially make the play-offs.

Dragić had attracted interest from the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors and Chicago Bulls as well, said the BDA Sports International agency, which also represents another Slovenian basketball ace, Luka Dončić. The speculations of Dragić potentially joining Dončić at the Dallas Mavericks have thus failed to materialise.
