Sports associations urged to boycott events in Russia, Belarus

Ljubljana – The Slovenian Olympic Committee on Saturday called on all sports associations to refrain from participating in competitions organised in Russian and Belarus, after International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach called for a boycott of competitions in the two countries.

It said that although sports should be above politics, “we simply cannot and should not look the other way” as Russia attacks Ukraine. “This is an unfathomable act that is causing the suffering of innocent people.”

The Slovenian Ski Association already said on Friday it would not send athletes to international competitions in Russia and Ukraine.

The Volleyball Association said today it would not send the national team to the World Championship in August if Russia remained the host.
