Delo thinks Macron better choice despite shortcomings

Ljubljana – Looking at the presidential run-off in France, Delo argues in Saturday’s commentary that incumbent President Emanuel Macron is a better choice than far-right candidate Marine Le Pen

The paper says the election pits the “haughty confused neoliberal Macronism” against “hateful national-populist Lepenism” at a time when colossal climate and social threats require forward-looking policies instead of nostalgic retrospection.

“Many people in France are furious. At Macron at the Elysée. Because he grabbed a handful of pieces of the already scattered pieces of the French puzzle. And scattered them some more. Arrogantly. As they fell. Politically fleeting and petty.”

“Any yet, of the Macron – Le Pen pairing, only the incumbent president can put France and the EU back together in a new puzzle of the world that we are already assembling, including due to the war in Ukraine.”

The people of France, youths in particular, are already promising and threatening that they will keep a close eye on him if he wins – “united on the rowdy street,” the paper concludes in the commentary Bleak French Puzzle.
