PM Golob to visit Brussels next week

Ljubljana – Prime Minister Robert Golob will travel to Brussels next week to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, his office told the STA on Tuesday. This will be his first visit to EU institutions following his government taking office last Wednesday.

It has become customary for a new Slovenia prime minister to go on their first visit abroad to Brussels or visit EU institutions.

A week later, on 23 and 24 June, Golob is expected to attend a regular EU summit in Brussels, the first for the new Slovenian prime minister.

Von der Leyen and Michel congratulated Golob as soon as he was elected prime minister.

Von der Leyen twitted: “Let’s work together on building a stronger Europe, for the challenges of today and tomorrow.”

Michel said he believed that Slovenia will actively participate and contribute to the development of the EU.

Golob has meanwhile recently joined a proposal by French President Emmanuel Macron to form a new centrist alliance in the EU.

Representatives of seven parties, including Golob’s Freedom Movement, addressed a letter with this proposal to the leadership of ALDE last Friday.

Since Golob’s party was formed just before the April general election, it has not yet joined any European alliance.

However, it is expected to join ALDE, given its close cooperation with two Slovenian ALDE members – the LMŠ and the SAB, which are in the process of merging with the Freedom Movement.
