Time for cultured night out as Summer Museum Night turns 20

Ljubljana – The 20th Summer Museum Night will take place on Saturday, yet again with an expanded list of museums, galleries and other institutions joining the initiative.

Between 6pm and midnight, 80 institutions in 62 locations across Slovenia will open their doors wide, providing free special guided tours, exhibitions, workshops, concerts and other events.

With the details of the programme available on the webpage of the Slovenian Museum Association and on the Summer Museum Night Facebook page, organisers took the opportunity of the round iteration to speak about the event’s history and hopes at Thursday’s press conference.

“Since its very beginning the Slovenian Museum Association has been working to promote cultural heritage alongside its other objectives. It was in this context that the Summer Museum Night was organised for the first time 20 years ago,” the association’s new head Alenka Černelič Krošelj said.

She succeeds Aleksandra Berberih Slana, who stressed the “festival” is extremely well attended every year, “as it is a unique event of its kind, and museums and galleries offer their best during this night”.

Summer Museum Night coordinator Simona Tripkovič, who is also biding farewell after five years, pointed out that eleven institutions were joining the campaign for the first time this year. They include the University of Primorska, while the University of Maribor has been part of it before.

“This year, the participants have again organised a wide variety of programmes, from museum openings and exhibitions to concerts and readings. There will be programmes for children and adults, everybody will find something to their liking,” said the coordinator.
