Pahor nominates Court of Audit head, central bank vice-governor

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor has nominated Jana Ahčin for Court of Audit president and Milan M. Cvikl for a vice-governor of the central bank after completing consultations with parliamentary groups’ heads last week and establishing both candidates enjoy the necessary support. The candidates will need at least 46 votes to get elected in a secret ballot.

Pahor estimates that the two candidates meet the expert criteria and have the necessary experience, his office said in a press release on Monday.

Ahčin, former director general of the Financial Administration (FURS), and Cvikl, a senior member of the Social Democrats (SD) since 2007, will each have a public hearing at the Presidential Palace before members of the National Assembly cast their votes.

Also in the running for the central bank vice-governor were Primož Dolenc, who held office until April, Miha Mihič, an executive director at Delavska Hranilnica bank, young entrepreneur Matjaž Noč and Sibil Svilan, former CEO of SID Bank, Slovenia’s development and export bank.

Cvikl has not applied for the vice-governor post, but agreed to be put up for consideration.

This was the second call for applications after the previous candidate put forward by Pahor, Marjan Divjak, a senior advisor at the treasury directorate, failed to garner enough support in parliament.

Under the law, Pahor must choose the candidate for the Court of Audit president from those who have applied for the job. Apart from Ahčin, these are Supreme State Auditor Miroslav Kranjc, former auditor and anti-fraud co-ordinator at the Finance Ministry Dušan Sterle and Supreme State Auditor Aleksej Šinigoj.

The term of the current president, Tomaž Vesel, has already expired and he is temporarily replaced by the court’s deputy president Maja Bilbija.

The National Assembly will hold a secret ballot in 30 days after receiving the nominations.
