Arčon vows to encourage youth involvement in diaspora organisations

Novo Mesto – The young generation plays a key role in preserving Slovenian identity in communities living abroad, Minister for Slovenians Abroad Matej Arčon said on Saturday, as he addressed the main event of Welcome Home, the 12th annual get-together of the Slovenian diaspora.

The minister, who took office at the start of June, vowed that his department would focus on encouraging the young to be involved in diaspora organisations.

His office will moreover pay a lot of attention to efforts for the preservation of the Slovenian language and culture, and to economic cooperation between Slovenia and Slovenian communities abroad, Arčon said.

He reiterated his wish that Slovenians living abroad would take part in the 2025 European Culture Project hosted by Nova Gorica and Gorizia, Italy, as the project focuses on the life of minority communities.

He also wishes for Slovenians living abroad to be the promoters of the Culture Capital project and co-creators of its programme.

Arčon thanked the organisers of the four-day Welcome Home event and said that proud patriot members of the diaspora were ambassadors of Slovenia.

The event on Saturday drew about 500 people and Welcome Home will conclude today with the 28th Camp of Slovenians Abroad at the Ljubljana Catholic school Zavod Sv. Stanislava.
