RTV poll shows Pirc Musar in the lead in presidential race

Ljubljana – Lawyer and ex-Info Commissioner Nataša Pirc Musar is in the lead in the presidential race, according to a poll conducted by Mediana for public broadcaster RTV Slovenija. She enjoys the support of 23.9% of respondents and is followed by former foreign minister Anže Logar (16.6%) and Freedom Movement vice-president Marta Kos (14.4%).

Among the 14 potential presidential candidates, including those who have not officially announced their bids and may not even enter the race, MEP Ljudmila Novak (EPP/NSi) places fourth on 9.6%, according to the poll.

All other candidates received less than 3%, with National Council President Alojz Kovšca polling at 2.8%, lawyer and former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Miro Cerar, who has since announced he will not run, at 2.7%, and the head of the non-parliamentary National Party (SNS) Zmago Jelinčič at 2.6%, the same as Kočevje Mayor Vladimir Prebilič.

Others received less than 2%, including psychoanalyst Nina Krajnik (1.5%) and musician Gregor Bezenšek (0.8%), who have officially announced their bids.

Former Constitutional Court President Ernest Petrič was backed by 1.7% of respondents, Foreign Ministry State Secretary Dejan Židan by 1.5%, and former MEP Ivo Vajgl 1.2%, although none of them has officially announced their would actually run for president.

Just over 8% of respondents are still undecided and just as many would not pick any of the candidates from the list provided by Mediana. Another 0.4% did not wish to answer and 0.7% would vote for some other candidate.

If Pirc Musar and Logar entered a second round, as the poll suggests, the lawyer would beat the Democrat (SDS) candidate with almost 53% against 32%, according to the poll. Almost 15% of respondents would not know who to vote for in this case.

If they were to choose between Pirc Musac and Kos in the run-off, the former would get almost 41% and the latter 28% with about a third of respondents undecided.

In a race between Kos and Logar, almost 45% of respondents would pick Kos while 35% would vote for Logar. About 20% of respondents would be undecided.

Pollster Mediana conducted the poll online among 707 adults between 4 and 7 July.
