Slovenia’s positive net migration lowest since 2017

Ljubljana – Slovenia recorded what is the lowest positive net migration since 2017 last year as 2,480 people more moved in than out. Compared to 2020, the number of people who moved in was down by more than a third while the number of people who moved out was up by almost 20%, the Statistics Office said.

A total of 23,624 people moved into Slovenia in 2021, while 21,144 moved out. Almost 4,000 Slovenian citizens moved into the country and almost 19,700 foreign citizens.

Meanwhile, more than 5,800 Slovenian and over 15,300 foreign citizens moved out of the country.

This is the 23rd consecutive year that Slovenia has recorded a positive net migration of foreign citizens but the lowest since 2011.

Last year, 4,339 more foreigners moved in than they moved out.

The most Slovenian citizens moving in last year came from Germany and Austria, while most foreigners came from Bosnia and Herzegovina. They accounted for 43% of all foreigners that moved in.

More than 20% of Slovenian citizens meanwhile moved to Austria, followed by Germany, Croatia and Switzerland.

Most foreigners who left Slovenia moved to Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by Serbia, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

Last year, 20% fewer moves within the country were recorded compared to 2020, the Statistics Office said.
