Piran on CNN’s list of 15 prettiest small towns in Europe

Washington – The Slovenian coastal town of Piran has made it to a list of the 15 prettiest small towns across Europe by the US television network CNN, which described it as a “mini Venice”.

“Developed by the Venetians, who conquered it in 1283, it’s a beautiful mini Venice, with a stout belltower, frothy architecture, and fishing boats docked in the tiny harbor,” says CNN’s Julia Buckley in her article.

She notes that although Slovenia has a “sliver of coastline” sandwiched between Italy and Croatia, it is home to several beautiful towns, including Piran.

Buckley says that the selected 15 towns boast “all the beautiful architecture and much of the culture you’ll find in the big hitters, only with fewer crowds to share them with”, and range “from humble fishing towns to hilltop medieval power bases”.

In addition to Piran, the list features Croatia’s Korčula, Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Italy’s Anghiari, Giethoorn in the Netherlands, Portugal’s Guimaraes, France’s Roscoff, Greece’s Nafplio, Ireland’s Kenmare, Poland’s Tarnow, Spain’s Regencos, Norway’s Reine, Germany’s Dinkelsbühl, England’s Clovelly and Italy’s Mazara del Vallo.
